Your first objective of offering anything for free is to get the name, address, phone number, and good email address in exchange for sending them the free object. Most people understand that when they ask for something for free, the person they order from is going to try to market something to make a profit at a later time.
If they do not give you this information, they do not deserve the free object, simple as that. You have opened your information up for them to view, and if they will not do that in return, you do not need them in your system. However, when they do divulge the information then you should treat them as if they have paid $1000 USD for your offering. You must provide them two things: value and service.
So your free object must be of value to them. It must make their life easier and or better. It must be something that will make their task at hand easier and or less expensive. Providing this value is going to do a very important thing: it is going to begin your relationship between you and your prospect.
People, including myself, like to do business with someone they know or have a link to, or someone they have had a pleasant experience with. If the clerk at the convenience store smiles or speaks to me, I will go back. If they are curt or rude, then I may go somewhere else next time. So when you talk with your prospect, make sure to make the email or phone call one that they will remember with a good feeling.
If you can provide a business person something that will help them grow their business or enrich their life, they will be a customer forever. You will become not only a friend but a trusted advisor.
